Apple iPhone 17: Worth Buying in 2026?

The iPhone 17 launched September 19, 2025 and remains one of the best value smartphones available at any price. At $799 it brings ProMotion 120Hz and Always-On display to the standard lineup alongside dual 48MP cameras and the A19 chip.

Display

The 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion adaptive 120Hz and Always-On is the headline upgrade. Peak brightness hits 3000 nits. Scrolling feels noticeably smoother than any previous standard iPhone. Ceramic Shield 2 makes the front glass 3x more scratch resistant.

A19 Chip

The A19 built on TSMC 3nm is fast across every task. Apps open instantly, multitasking is smooth, gaming performs excellently, and the neural engine handles all Apple Intelligence features on-device for privacy.

Dual 48MP Cameras

Both rear cameras are now 48MP — main wide and upgraded ultrawide. The ultrawide now performs well in low light for the first time on a standard iPhone. The 18MP front camera with landscape selfie mode is excellent. Video at 4K 120fps with Cinematic Mode is class leading.

iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence

Ships with iOS 26 featuring Liquid Glass design. Apple Intelligence includes enhanced writing tools, improved cross-app Siri, Image Playground, and Genmoji. All features run on-device for privacy.

From iPhone 14 or older: upgrade confidently. From iPhone 15: worthwhile for ProMotion and cameras. From iPhone 16: real but modest improvement. The iPhone 17 at $799 is the best value iPhone Apple has made. Score: 9/10
