How to Transfer Data to Your New Phone (iPhone & Android)

Step by step guide to transferring all your data, photos, apps and settings to a new phone. Works for both iPhone and Android.

Getting a new phone is exciting but the process of transferring all your data can be daunting. Here's our complete step-by-step guide to moving everything from your old phone to your new one โ€” whether you're switching between iPhones, Android phones, or crossing platforms.

Transferring from iPhone to iPhone

Apple makes switching between iPhones straightforward with Quick Start. Place your new iPhone next to your old one, follow the on-screen prompts, and iOS will transfer everything wirelessly including apps, settings, photos, and messages. Make sure both phones are charged and connected to Wi-Fi before starting. The process typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on how much data you have.

Transferring from Android to Android

Most Android phones include a built-in transfer tool. Samsung uses Smart Switch, Google uses the Setup wizard. Connect your old and new phone with a cable or use the wireless option, select what you want to transfer, and the process begins automatically. Google Photos backup ensures your photos are safe in the cloud regardless.

Switching from iPhone to Android

Download the Switch to Android app on your iPhone before you begin. This Google-made app transfers contacts, photos, videos, calendar events, and WhatsApp data. Note that iMessage conversations and some app data cannot be transferred โ€” you'll need to disable iMessage on your iPhone before switching to avoid missing texts.

Switching from Android to iPhone

Apple's Move to iOS app handles the heavy lifting. Download it on your Android phone, open it during your iPhone setup, and follow the prompts. It transfers contacts, message history, photos, videos, bookmarks, and some app data. Allow plenty of time as large transfers can take over an hour.

Don't Forget

Before switching, always back up your old phone, sign out of Apple ID or Google account, deregister iMessage if switching from iPhone, and transfer your physical SIM or order an eSIM from your carrier.
