How to Free Up Storage on Your iPhone: 15 Tips That Actually Work

iPhone storage full? These 15 tips will free up gigabytes of space on your iPhone without deleting anything important.

The "iPhone Storage Almost Full" notification is one of the most common frustrations iPhone users face. Before you buy a new phone or pay for more iCloud storage, try these 15 tips to reclaim significant space.

Check What's Using Space First

Go to Settings โ†’ General โ†’ iPhone Storage. This shows a breakdown of exactly what is consuming your storage. iOS also provides personalised recommendations for freeing space โ€” follow these first as they're specific to your usage patterns.

Offload Unused Apps

iOS's "Offload App" feature removes the app but keeps its data โ€” so if you reinstall later everything is exactly as you left it. Go to Settings โ†’ General โ†’ iPhone Storage โ†’ Enable "Offload Unused Apps" to do this automatically. You can also manually offload individual apps from the same menu.

Clear Safari Cache

Safari accumulates gigabytes of cached website data. Go to Settings โ†’ Safari โ†’ Clear History and Website Data. This frees significant space and can actually speed up browsing on older devices.

Delete and Re-download Streaming Apps

Streaming apps like Netflix, Spotify, and Apple Music store downloaded content that accumulates silently. Check each app's settings for downloaded content and delete anything you've finished watching or listening to. Alternatively, delete and reinstall the app entirely to start fresh.

Manage Photos and Videos

Photos are usually the biggest storage consumer. Enable iCloud Photos (Settings โ†’ Photos โ†’ iCloud Photos) to store full-resolution originals in iCloud while keeping optimised versions on your device. Delete duplicate photos using the Duplicates album in the Photos app โ€” iOS identifies these automatically. Delete videos you've already watched or backed up.

Clear Message Attachments

Years of photos, videos, and GIFs sent via iMessage accumulate. Go to Settings โ†’ General โ†’ iPhone Storage โ†’ Messages โ†’ Review Large Attachments to see and delete the biggest ones. You can also set messages to auto-delete after 30 days or 1 year in Settings โ†’ Messages โ†’ Keep Messages.

Delete Downloaded Podcasts and Music

If you use Apple Podcasts, check Settings โ†’ General โ†’ iPhone Storage โ†’ Podcasts to see downloaded episodes. Delete any you've listened to. In Apple Music, go to Downloads and remove albums and playlists you stream rather than need offline.

Use "Other" Storage Cleaner

The mysterious "Other" category in iPhone storage contains system files, caches, and Siri data. The best way to clear it is to back up your iPhone in iTunes/Finder on a computer and restore from that backup โ€” this often reduces Other storage significantly without losing any data.
